Such a simple word, but such a powerful word.

If you’re serious about getting control over your blood sugars and are thinking about what it would take to get off your medications for diabetes or high blood pressure, I want you to spend some time with this question.

I want you to get crystal clear on what your reasons are because these are what will fuel you and edify you when you think you’re failing, want to quit, or just want to bury your head in the sand with macaroni and cheese.

Your reasons determine your level of commitment.  Ask yourself: on a scale of 1 to 10, how badly do I want to be free of my diabetes?  Rate it.

Then ask yourself why you gave it that number.

And for fun (if it’s not already a 10), ask yourself: what would it take to make it a 10?  Would something bad have to happen?  Would you have to go on insulin?  Whatever the circumstance, it is worth knowing because then you can question it.  Do you really want to wait?

Here is an example of how powerful a compelling reason can be:

Quitting smoking is probably one of the hardest habits to break.  I have seen people continue to smoke even when they have severe lung disease because of it.  EVEN people on OXYGEN may continue to smoke because they just can’t figure out how to quit.  Some people shake their head at this, but I just marvel at how addictive cigarettes can be for someone to be so helplessly attached that they want it more than they want to breath!😮

Consider what can happen when a smoker receives a diagnosis of lung cancer.  In a moment, they can decide to quit a habit they have been powerless to break for decades.  Lung cancer is devastating.  Even if you find it when it is still confined to the lungs, it carries almost a 50% mortality rate in 5 years.

Your brain is that powerful.  It can DECIDE in a moment to do something that seemed impossible only moments before.  And what made it so definite was the REASON.💥

This is dramatic, but here is another example that really makes this clear.

What if I told you that if you had another A1c above 7%, harm would come to your family.  Someone would be physically harmed if you had another A1c above goal.  You would probably never even let the possibility of that happen again.  It’s because of your reason.  Anytime you thought about giving up, or you made a bad judgement, you would refocus and get right back on track.  That is called resilience – your ability to recover quickly from a failure or mistake.

Here are some questions to help you dig deep into finding your why:💭

  1. What would be the impact of reversing your Type 2 Diabetes?  On your life, on your future, on your family?  Would you live longer or live more fully because of it?  How?
  2. What would change for the better if you reversed your Type 2 Diabetes?
  3. What would be the impact of NOT doing it?
  4. What would it take for you to commit to doing it NO MATTER WHAT?

Think about all your reasons.  Write them down.  When you read those reasons, how does it make you feel?

Your feelings are the most important sign that you’ve got a good reason.  Because feeling drive your actions.  When I really want to master a goal, I want to feel committed, focused, motivated, and even driven.  I want to feel unstoppable.  Your THOUGHTS will create these feelings.  Your REASONS will fuel your actions.

Then you want to make a decision.  That is called committing.  And then you take action until you get the result you want.
